Thunderstorms bring hail to Southern California

A series of fast-moving thunderstorms brought hail, lightning, heavy rain and strong winds to parts of Southern California, and forecasters say the extreme weather could continue into the evening.

The National Weather Service issued a series of warnings and advisories Saturday for sections of Orange, Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

Frequent lightning, hail and wind gusts up to 40 miles an hour were expected in the Oxnard area in the late afternoon.
The California Highway Patrol says several collisions occurred as a result of flooding and sliding rocks on the 14 Freeway in Palmdale and Acton.

Earlier, hail the size of pennies was reported across large swaths of Orange County.

Lightning knocked out electricity to some businesses in southern Kern County. Sporadic power outages were also reported in Los Angeles, but a Southern California Edison spokesman says electricity was quickly restored to all customers.
