The Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens is home to more than 1,100 mammals, birds and reptiles from around the world, including several rare and endangered species. Birds: Dozens of colorful and noisy species abound at the Los Angeles Zoo, including the cockatoo, African crowned eagle, bald eagle, snowy egret, scarlet ibis, sacred ibis, laughing kookaburra, three kinds of Macaw, ostrich, Hawaiian short-eared owl, parrot, Congo peafowl, pelican, king vulture, and many more!

Mammals: The zoo’s most famous residents are included in this list, which features American black bears, jaguars, African wild dogs, African lion, otters, Sumatran tigers, harbor seals, kangaroos, koalas, wallaby, Asian elephants, hippopotamus, lemurs, seven kinds of monkeys, cotton-topped tamarin, Chinese water deer, Speke’s gazelle, Masai giraffes, Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs, desert bighorn sheep, mountain tapir, and dozens more.

Amphibians: These unique creatures can live both in fresh water and on land, and the Los Angeles Zoo is home to the Axloti, and the Couch’s spadefoot toad!

Botanical Gardens: Most people come to see the animals, but what many don’t realize is that there is a world full of equally impressive, unique, and animated plants and flowers waiting to be discovered. Check out the park’s Botanical Gardens, where you’ll see the living things that provide food, shade, and entertainment to us and our animal neighbors. You’ll see plants such as the Chilean wine palm, bald cypress, cycads, cactus, and more. Some of these hardy plants have been in existence since the age of dinosaurs, and you’ll have the rare chance to learn and witness how they have adapted to survive.
