When did California become a state?
California joined the union on the 9th of September 1850, as the 31st state.
California became part of the US in 1846 when they conquered it during the Mexican War and then became a US State in 1850.
It became a part of the US as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo signed on 2 February 1848 ending the Mexican American War. It was admitted to the Union as a state on 9 September 1850.
As part of the 1850 Compromise.
In exchanging for allowing California to join the Union as free soil, the South was allowed two more slave-states, and a rigorous enforcing of the Fugitive Slave Act.
